United Way of Greater Mercer County CEO shares the secret to their success

Herb Klein is a numbers guy. A lover of spreadsheets and statistics, he frequently quotes long lists of financial facts and figures and seems the type who could rattle off a significant portion of pi on request. But in 2010, he was faced with a mathematical riddle even he struggled to solve: How do you measure compassion?Today, the CEO and president of the United Way of Greater Mercer County thinks he’s found his answer, and it’s helped him and the nonprofit he leads stretch the dollars donated to the organization.

Every dollar donated to the UWGMC in fiscal year 2014 was turned into $19.70 worth of services — a 96 percent jump from the previous year, where each dollar churned out $10.07 worth of help. That number was subsequently larger than fiscal year 2012, which equated to $9.06 for every dollar donated.

The huge jump comes from a set of structural changes that were implemented in response to a major drop in donations in 2012. With its chief source of funding dwindling, Klein — who came from the private sector to take the reins of the organization in 2010 — decided it was time to focus not just on the quality of help it provided, but the quantity.
