Trenton leaders, ownership celebrate grand reopening of Lafayette Street hotel
James McEvoy | June 19, 2014Officials are hoping today’s grand reopening of the city’s lone hotel – rechristened as the Wyndham Garden Trenton Hotel – represents a new beginning for both the former Lafayette Yard Hotel and the city. The 164-room hotel on West Lafayette Street, which has been undergoing renovations since it was purchased from the city at auction in November for $6 million, will hopefully lead to an economic boon for the downtown, officials said during a ceremony in the hotel’s newly renovated ballroom.
City officials had similar hopes in the past for the former Trenton Marriott. However, the complex, which cost $60 million to build with an attached garage, has struggled to turn a profit since its opening in 2002. The garage remains in the ownership of the city’s parking authority and was not part of the sale.
