Gov. Chris Christie, Trenton Mayor-elect Eric Jackson hold Statehouse meeting to discuss city

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie’s open reluctance to work with the city under former Mayor Tony Mack was understandable, in the view of Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes.

“There was enough doubt in everyone’s mind that they didn’t want to wholeheartedly put funding in the hands of Trenton,” Hughes said. “It needed a new mayor to turn the page, and that’s where we are.”

Hughes facilitated a Statehouse meeting Friday between Christie and Trenton Mayor-elect Eric Jackson, who officially takes office Tuesday. Christie’s senior staff was at the 45-minute meeting, Jackson said, as well as Hughes and James Gee, executive director of Jackson’s transition team.

Christie and Jackson spoke briefly last week at the groundbreaking ceremony for Thomas Edison State College’s new nursing education center, but this was their first opportunity to sit down and talk since Jackson won a June 10 runoff election against Paul Perez.
