Trenton city council resets salary for deputy city clerk

TRENTON — City council voted unanimously Tuesday night to re-set the deputy city clerk’s salary at $57,636 after learning that because of an error she was making $65,000 for the last two years.

Cordelia Staton, a former councilwoman hired to the clerk’s office in 2012, voluntarily brought the salary mistake to the attention of council after learning of it. Staton said she wasn’t aware she was receiving the incorrect salary and assumed that the increase was because her position came with a salary range and step increases. But when no further increases came she investigated and was told she had been overpaid, she said.

City council members did not request that Staton pay back the extra salary she has been collecting over the last two years. A city attorney previously said because it was not an error caused by the employee it did not seem fair to try to take the pay from her.
