Trenton school board agrees to transport students with special needs to after-school programs

on June 26, 2014 at 6:59 PMTRENTON — The school district and parents of city students with special needs have come to an agreement over transporting their children to after-school programs.
Nicole Whitfield, a special education advocate who was working with a large group of parents, said she met with the district’s special education department a few weeks ago to discuss the difficulty parents were having because the district would not transport their children to an after-school program, but rather picked them up and dropped them off at home.
“It was agreed that all students which required transportation per their (individualized education plan) would be able to have transportation from their home to the school and then after school to whatever location the parent designates,” said Kathy Smallwood-Johnson, the district’s spokeswoman and director of the district’s office of Family and Community Engagement.
