Trenton Thunder ballpark to host home run derby to benefit Jimmy V Foundation

“Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.” Those are the words Jim Valvano said during the 1993 ESPY Awards only two months before losing his battle to cancer.

More than 20 years after that speech, his V Foundation — established by the former North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN commentator in the months before his death — is still making great efforts to raise money for cancer research.

One of those efforts is set for Sunday, when 40 of the best high school baseball players from New Jersey and Pennsylvania will take the field at the Arm & Hammer Park during the first Jimmy V. Penn-Jersey Home Run Derby, sponsored by the Philly Friends of V, with hopes of raising more than $50,000 for the V Foundation.

The derby will follow the 1:05 p.m. Akron RubberDucks vs. Trenton Thunder game.
