National Night Out celebrations a fun way to create community bonds

EWING — After Mira Lukas’ first throw just barely missed the bull’s-eye, the frustrated look on her face only intensified as the man in the dunk tank began to taunt her.

“Are you the president of the missing club? Can you see the target?” volunteer Jason Greco mocked.

Like many of the people who stepped up to dunk Greco last night, 9-year-old Mira of Trenton stormed away after a few unsuccessful attempts.

“I got mad because he was saying rude things,” she said. “I would’ve gotten him.”

Still, she said, it was her favorite attraction during last night’s National Night Out, an annual, nationwide event aimed at creating bonds between residents and police, fire and emergency service departments to help fight crime.

Hundreds of community members mingled at the Ewing Senior and Community Center. Other National Night Out celebrations last night took place in East Windsor, Hamilton, Hightstown, Hopewell, Lawrence, Princeton, Robbinsville, Trenton and West Windsor.
