The law change would mean that when seeking applicants for department director jobs or cabinet-level jobs, the administration would not be required to choose only candidates living in Trenton.
The exemption from residency also would apply to those positions that require special skills or talents.
The city’s residency law has been in effect since 1972 and has often been a point of contention for elected officials who want Trenton to attract the best and brightest, but also want to build the city’s middle class by providing well-paying jobs to residents.
The ordinance will go up for a first vote during the council meeting tomorrow.
