Children from HomeFront’s Camp Mercer get taste of 18th-century gardening

Children from HomeFront’s Camp Mercer got a taste of the 18th century yesterday as they explored the kitchen gardens at the William Trent House in Trenton.

Throughout the day, volunteers from the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County taught the children how to grow and use herbs, how to pickle cucumbers and how to harvest many different vegetables.

They even got to taste some of the items grown in the garden, including fresh-picked cucumbers and sweet potato leaves.

The event was the third of three garden programs this summer, and the main goal was for the kids to have fun and to learn about what it was like to live in the 18th century.
