N.J. official calls again for pay-to-play reform amid Trenton loophole

TRENTON — Jeff Brindle, executive director of the state Election Law Enforcement Commission, is calling again for the Legislature to reform the state’s pay-to-play law in the wake of a loophole in the law illuminated by a Trenton blogger.

The case involves the South Jersey law firm Long Marmero, where one of the founding partners served as the treasurer of a political action committee that donated $8,200 to Trenton Mayor Eric Jackson’s election campaign. That firm was later granted a contract with the city worth up to $20,000.

Because neither the law firm nor any of its partners made a donation to the PAC, the contract award was not a violation of the city’s pay-to-play law, city attorney David Minchello said.
