People sat on lawn chairs or lay on blankets, browsed the 100-plus vendors and danced to music blaring from all corners.
The festival, now in its fourth year, helps foster a sense of pride, togetherness and community while offering a family-fun atmosphere, organizers said.
Candice Frederick, one of the event’s organizers, said it is important to highlight and connect people to their African-American culture.
“It’s a culture of family, community, tradition,” she said. “And although mainstream won’t allow you to think that way or show images that depict that, this day is a culmination of all of that to show the true African-American culture.”
The decision to change its name from the African-American Pride Festival stemmed from the growing disconnect between people and their culture, Frederick said.
