Trenton school board abruptly cancels meeting after another board member resigns

TRENTON – With the resignation of a third school board member in as many months, the board has had to cancel tonight’s meeting because it does not have enough board members to convene.

The meeting was canceled this afternoon, said Kathleen Smallwood Johnson, an attorney for the board and the district’s spokeswoman. She said the board needs five members for a quorum, but after Roslyn Council resigned her post late Sunday night there are only four.

Council joins board members Sasa Olessi-Montano and Mary Taylor Hayes who submitted their resignation letters at the end of June.

Mayor Eric Jackson, who is charged with appointing members to the board, said Friday he hoped to appoint individuals to fill the vacancy by today. But, Michael Walker, a spokesman for the mayor, said this afternoon Jackson will take another week or so before selecting individuals for the board.
