Editorial: Capital City Food Truck Battle taps into foodie tourism in Trenton

Not too long ago, trend spotters proclaimed the golden age of food trucks. They saw the quick meals and esoteric specialties as a mobile mecca for customers without much time or money but an appetite for a bit of adventure.

From that pinnacle, it’s been downhill, according to those who make it their business to know. The surest sign that food trucks are losing their epicurean edge, some say, is that TGI Friday’s is now deploying trucks dispensing its chain restaurant fare streetside.

As is usually the case in such matters, the truth is to be found somewhere in the middle.

And on Sept. 27, it can be found at the Trenton Social on South Broad Street where about a dozen food trucks from throughout the area will compete in the first Capital City Food Truck Battle. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., contestants including The Dapper Dog from Philadelphia, Cupcake Carnivale of Princeton and Fired Up Flatbread Company from Hunterdon County will be serving up their specialties. At the end of the day, diners will cast a vote for their favorite.
