‘No drama, no chaos, no guns’: Community pickup games a big hit in Trenton

TRENTON — For a group of residents organizing pickup games of softball and kickball in the city, it’s not about wins or losses — it’s about getting the community back together.

“In our black community, it was definitely needed, and it was a very big help for our youth, especially,” said Adriane Ridley of Morrisville, Pa.

It all started as a simple softball game last Father’s Day between men from North and West Trenton at Cadwalader Park. Organizers say in all, including fans, there were no more than 50 people in attendance. Since then, the weekly games have expanded to included kickball for women and has consistently attracted between 1,500 and 2,000 players and spectators each Sunday.

“This is to show that we can come together and we can get along,” said Ridley, a member of the Westside Kickers. “It just takes time and patience — and look at what we did.”
