Thompson has been a longtime city employee who was appointed as acting director in 2010 and subsequently director of the inspections department in 2012.
“As of today, Cleveland Thompson is no longer an employee of the City of Trenton,” city spokesman Michael Walker said this afternoon.
Walker said he could not comment further about the circumstances of Thompson’s dismissal citing city policy regarding personnel matters.
Walker would not say if a replacement director has been selected to oversee the department or when one would be selected.
Before his promotion to the administration, Thompson worked as the city’s electrical sub code official in the inspections department. Thompson, who started working for the city in 1989, also previously served as president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 2281, representing about 50 city employees.
