Trenton school officials have been successful in quelling concerns of ESL students

TRENTON – School district officials have been mostly successful in discussing with the parents of bilingual students the importance of keeping their children enrolled in bilingual classes even though the classes have been moved to the Trenton High School West campus.

Juan Martinez, a community activist and member of the Parent Teacher Association, said he had been fielding phone calls from residents who were nervous about sending their children on a bus to a new school across town each day. Martinez and other PTA
members met with Superintendent Francisco Duran this week regarding the concerns of parents.

Martinez said the district has been successful in quelling the concerns of parents and students and keep all but two individuals enrolled in the bilingual program.

Kathy Smallwood Johnson, a spokeswoman for the district, said the district was able to meet with parents and students and explained that all students would receive bus tickets for transportation.
