EWING — After years of neglecting the regular replacement schedule for township police vehicles, the council and administration have been working to purchase new cars to replace an aging fleet rife with mechanical problems.

“We had some real issues with some of the police vehicles,” Mayor Bert Steinmann said. “We are in the process of getting that taken care of.”

Over the course of two years, township business administrator Jim McManimon said, the municipality has purchased 13 new police cars and SUVs — enough to bring the fleet back to its optimal level.

The purchases included replacing the 7-year-old SUVs for the department’s four canine handlers last year, as well as three unmarked vehicles for detectives and investigators. The cost of a police-equipped SUV is about $37,500, according to the mayor.

The rest of the new cars are marked units being used by patrol officers, McManimon said.
