on October 24, 2013 at 5:37 AM, updated October 24, 2013 at 5:41 AMTwenty years ago, The Dow Jones Industrial Average had yet to breach the 4,000 mark, Trenton’s grandiose hotel was but a grand idea, and the city was struggling to find a firm foothold for its post-industrial future.
Since that time, the financial markets have taken the country on a heart-stopping ride, the hotel has risen — and fallen on hard times, and Trenton is still in search of direction for a solid second act.
Over that time, the Trenton Small Business Week has endeavored to nurture and guide entrepreneurs and optimists toward a solid livelihood in the city’s neighborhoods and in the region.
Businesses have started up; many others have folded. Sure-fire ventures have vanished and unlikely enterprises have taken root.
But practical advice, animated by a sense of confidence, has remained a constant commodity traded by the organizers and participants in the business week activities.
The latest installment, which wraps up this evening, has offered seminars on management and strategy, a business expo at the Sun National Bank Center, networking opportunities and recognition of achievements.Experts and consultants spoke about small-business financing, marketing, use of social media, resources for veterans, and making the most of government resources.
