‘Our shelves are almost empty’: Mercer County food pantries face shortages

TRENTON — Residents line up outside Mercer County food pantries and soup kitchens every day hoping to fill a grocery bag with nonperishable items and eat a hot meal. But this month, donations to local food pantries have been scarce, and some organizations have even turned people away as their shelves remain bare.

“This is freaking me out. I’ve never seen our food pantry shelves so empty,” said Lisa Thibault, a spokeswoman for Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton. “We don’t have enough to feed people right now. We’re always in dire need, but I have never seen this.”

Food pantry case manager Talaya Woodall said the Catholic Ministries on North Warren Street in the city has begun rationing out its food supply. It usually distributes goods three times a week to 40 families per day, but the organization has cut back to serving 25 families per day because of the shortage
