on November 06, 2013 at 12:01 AM, updated November 06, 2013 at 12:13 AMIncumbents swept to victory across most of Mercer County last night as two county freeholders and the mayors of Robbinsville and West Windsor won reelection, though a council race in Lawrence remained too close to call last night.
In addition, a hotly contested but non-binding question in Hopewell Township over ownership of a stretch of road was defeated, though the referendum is still being challenged in court.
Freeholders Anthony Carabelli of Trenton and Andrew Koontz of Princeton won reelection over two Republican challengers, Ron Cefalone of Hopewell and Paul Hummel of East Windsor. They will serve three-year terms on a board that has been dominated by Democrats for 16 years.
In Lawrence, the council race was too close to call, township Clerk Kathy Norcia said. The town is waiting on 75 provisional ballots, and Norcia said she hopes to have a result by the end of this week.
Mayor James Kownacki and Councilman Stephen Brame were up against Republicans Max Ramos and Glenn Collins for four-year council terms. Kownacki, who was elected to council in 2009, has been mayor since 2012. Brame joined council this year to fill the vacancy left by former Councilman Greg Puliti.
