Contractor sues Trenton for unpaid $46,820 bill for batting cage project

TRENTON — Unpaid bills for contractors continue to pile up at City Hall.

In the latest billing dispute, Frey Engineering of Lebanon has filed suit to recover $46,820 they claim Trenton owes them for a project to build batting cages at a baseball field in Hamilton that Trenton uses.

Frey contends the work was done nearly two years ago, between March and August 2012. City council has responded that the work was not properly authorized.

Although the city’s business administrator and attorney have urged city council to approve a partial payment of $43,385 for the work completed by Frey Engineering, the motion to pay the bill has twice failed to gain city council approval.

In October, Council President George Muschal, Councilman Zachary Chester and Councilwoman Marge Caldwell Wilson voted against making the payment. They said the work was illegally authorized by former city employee Charles Hall III. Council members said the work was performed under the direction of Hall but without council’s knowledge or approval.
