TRENTON — The Crisis Ministry of Mercer County launched its annual Valentines for Food program last week, teaming with local schools, churches and businesses to collect food and monetary donations for its three food pantries.

“As we enter into 2014, we are preparing for our highest levels of service in the Crisis Ministry’s history,” Crisis Ministry executive director Carolyn Biondi said. “More people relied on our food pantries in 2013 than ever before, and all indicators point to even greater need in 2014. We are grateful for the support of our community that makes our service possible.”

Last year’s drive collected 10.6 tons of food and $12,000 in monetary donations, Biondi said.

As part of the program, McCaffrey’s supermarket locations in Princeton and West Windsor will sell $4.99 “Valentines for Food” from Feb. 1 to Feb. 14, matching up to $5,000 of shoppers’ purchases, Biondi said.

Food drives in the Princeton and West Windsor-Plainsboro school districts are underway, in addition to drives at Ewing High School, the Hun School and the Pennington School, Biondi said.

Food drives are scheduled at various churches throughout Mercer County as well.
