Editorial: Proposed $130M project to remake Trenton Central High School is monumental opportunity for city

The proposal – which calls for tearing down most of the deteriorating structure, but preserving several of the iconic elements of the 82-year-old building — represents the best visions of educators and preservationists.

Several past proposals have fizzled due to costs, timing and community opposition to razing the historic structure. Trenton, formerly classified as one of the state’s low-income Abbott districts, qualifies for complete funding of the project from the state.

Even presented on that silver platter, previous plans for a new school stirred up arguments in the community over whether to repair or rebuild. The quarreling continued until the opportunity disappeared.

Opportunity has knocked again, and we urge that the door be opened wide. For the Trenton school community, which has battled the state for years to have even the most egregious problems addressed, it represents a dream come true.
