Gifted and talented program returning to Trenton schools

TRENTON — The city school district hasn’t had a gifted and talented program for more than a decade, but that will change next fall.

Last week the school board approved a process by which to enroll students in a new accelerated learning program and secured classroom space inside the Joyce Kilmer Middle School.

The Donald Shelton Gifted and Talented Middle School, named after the 17-year veteran of the school board, will occupy 10 classrooms inside Joyce Kilmer and function as its own school. Students will be accepted based on a recommendation from a teacher, parent or guardian, or a student’s own appeal for acceptance.

To be invited to participate in the program, a student must be high-performing based on three of seven measures — test scores, grades, performance, art or science projects, intelligence testing, teacher or administration recommendation, and parent or student recommendation.

The process is intended to be nondiscriminatory and parents or guardians may appeal an eligibility decision in writing to the superintendent.
