Mercer County Big Brothers, Big Sisters sees uptick in membership

TRENTON — Six years ago, a small nonprofit organization served about 100 children. Today, that same organization provides support to some 500 children and families across Mercer County each year.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Mercer County, based on East Franklin Street, has blossomed into an organization with programming and partnerships across the county. And earlier this month, the nonprofit held its sixth annual Big/Little Picnic — an event for program participants to enjoy an afternoon of music, food and games, while taking time to reflect on the work the organization has accomplished.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County has been recruiting, vetting, managing and supporting one-to-one mentoring matches between caring adults in the community and children in challenging circumstances since 1973,” said Anita Hanft, director of community relations for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Mercer.
