Trenton Mayor Muschal signs agreement allowing city to receive nearly $23 million in state aid
By Jenna Pizzi/The Times of Trenton
on June 27, 2014 at 10:50 PMTRENTON — After weeks of back-and-forth, Mayor George Muschal signed an agreement with the state Department of Community Affairs that will allow the city to receive $22.9 million in state aid.
Muschal agreed to sign a revised copy of the document Friday afternoon. The agreement will end on Monday, the last full day of his term in office before Mayor-elect Eric Jackson is inaugurated on Tuesday at noon. The original agreement, which was sent to his office this spring, soon after he was sworn in on Feb. 26, would have been in effect until the end of fiscal year 2015, which ends on June 30, 2015.
“We worked out what we had to work out in favor of the new mayor coming in and we are happy with it,” Muschal said.
The memorandum of understanding, which is required before the state will release any aid dollars, places several restrictions on mayoral power and requires the administration to have prior approval from the state before hiring and firing any city department director. The city must also receive DCA approval before borrowing money or signing large contracts.
