Cheers! Trenton City Council passes first ever hotel liquor license

TRENTON — The city’s only hotel may be serving up libations again in September thanks to a new hotel liquor license created by city council at their meeting tonight.

Because the formerly city-owned hotel was never before under private ownership, the city never had to create its own hotel liquor license, said acting city attorney David Minchello.

The resolution passed unanimously last night to create the first-time license. The city only has one hotel that would be eligible for the license — The Wyndham Garden Trenton.

The fee for the license was initially set at $10,000, but an amendment put forth by Councilwoman Marge Caldwell-Wilson lowered the fee to $2,500.

“We want to be partners with the hotel,” Caldwell-Wilson said, adding that the hotel owners have spent a good deal of money renovating the Lafayette Street building and obtaining the Wyndham flag.

“We have to start being business friendly,” she said.

Councilwoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson argued that lowering the fee to $2,500 would be too nominal, but ultimately only gained support from Councilman Zachary Chester.
