Trenton spokesman Michael Walker was tight lipped today about the governor’s visit but said the Mayor Eric Jackson is pleased to “lay out the welcome mat” for Christie and a host of other dignitaries from across the state for the event slated to begin at 2 p.m.
Walker would not say specifically what the announcement will be, only referring to it as a statewide crime issue.
“It will impact the entire state and, from our perspective what the governor is dong is needed, particularly for New Jersey’s urban centers,” Walker said.
If Christie is looking for a good place to announce a fresh stand against violence, Trenton has all the makings. Last year it notched a record number of homicides, most of them by gun, and the homicide rate in Trenton was higher in the first six months of this year than in Newark, Detroit and Philadelphia, none of which are known as particularly peaceful cities. Just last week in Trenton, two men were shot to death, one of them while waiting at a bus stop.
